Shibari is an art form using rope and techniques developed in Japan for torture and has evolved and been modified for both safety and beauty to create a thriving art form. It is a deconstruction of the way we view the body, presented using performance in such a way that it innately asks to be perceived as art. In a similar way that aerial performance or dance is presented, but with the history of violence, it is a subversion of power dynamics that shape our world, asking to disrupt the way we view the body through reclamation of power dynamics as beauty.

Shibari shares many parallels with Glitch Art

Glitch art, as defined by Nick Briz, is not error. Glitch art is taking a familiar system and using it in an unfamiliar way. In using kinbaku, semenawa, and other forms of shibari in ways not intentionally familiar to the carcereal punishments of Japan, we are creating moments of connection with body, connection between partners, and connection with other community members in the rope community as a whole, all while creating beautiful moments in time through photography and performance.
